Shortlines
of Arkansas
by Clifton Hull
If you want to model Arkansas railroading, this book is highly recommended.
Many of these shortlines operated as feeders to the MoPac and it's
great to have the "supporting cast" show up from time to time if you
model. So many of these lines used GE 70 tonners or S1s
long after all the MoP switchers were EMD or reengined units. Using
the book as a guide, the modelor can accurately represent steam operations
in the Jenks Blue era! Can you imagine dropping off tank
cars with a GP18 to a connection with a fat-boilered ex-Army 2-8-0?
For example, if you don't have the space to do an oil refinery, you
can easily have an Alco show up from the El Dorado and Wesson with
a cut of cars. Or, you can have a company delivering bridge traffic (like
the A&LM delivering Rock Island cars from Crossett, AR to
the MoP in Monroe, LA) that shows up in your yard from time to time.
